Ceylon turmeric, also known as true turmeric, is the dried rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa, which belongs to the Zingiberaceae family and is native to Sri Lanka. It is a perennial herbaceous plant with broad lanceolate leaves and a bright yellow-orange rhizome that is harvested and dried for various uses. The dried turmeric is ground into powder and is classified based on the quality, colour, and aroma.
It is widely used in cooking, adding flavour and vibrant colour to dishes such as curries, rice, soups, and marinades. Turmeric is also a key ingredient in traditional remedies, known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Additionally, it is used in skincare products and beverages like turmeric lattes due to its beneficial health effects.
Sri Lanka is renowned for producing high-quality Ceylon turmeric, often considered superior to other varieties available in the market.
